New Coronavirus from China: Everything You Need To Know

A deadly new strain of coronavirus has killed over a hundred people in China and infected thousands more across the world. Indian authorities are working to prevent the spread of the infectant, known as the 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV). No positive cases have been reported here so far.

The World Health Organisation says the new coronavirus epidemic is a high global risk but hasn't declared it a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, or PHEIC.

In December 2019, a pneumonia outbreak was reported in Wuhan, China. On 31 December 2019, the outbreak was traced to a novel strain of coronavirus which was labelled as 2019-nCoV by the World Health Organization (WHO).

By 28 January 2020, more than 130 deaths had been reported and more than 5,570 confirmed cases in this coronavirus pneumonia outbreak. The Wuhan strain has been identified as a new strain of Betacoronavirus from group 2B with a ~70% genetic similarity to the SARS-CoV. The virus was suspected to have originated in snakes, but many leading researchers disagree with this conclusion.

“The more we learn about it, the greater the possibility is that transmission will not be able to be controlled with public health measures,” said Dr. Allison McGeer, a Toronto-based infectious disease specialist who contracted SARS in 2003 and who helped Saudi Arabia control several hospital-based outbreaks of MERS.
